Highland whisky comes in many forms due to the region being so far-reaching and Scotland's largest whisky region. There are currently 30 distilleries in the Highlands and the best way to distinguish each of their styles is to divide the region into the 4 points of the compass.
North
Home to the big bodied single malts such as The Dalmore and the lightly spiced Glenmorangie.
East
Lots of malts with fruit and pungency and quite full-bodied. Also home to smokey treasures such as Ardmore and Glen Garioch.
South
Drier, lighter whiskies with grassy notes. Aberfeldy produces stunning malts in this region.
West
Closer to the coast bringing smokiness and peat. Pulteney is a prime example of these maritime flavoured whiskies.
